Joint Base Lewis-McChord is one of the most sought after bases to be stationed at. Surrounded by breathtaking, spectacular views of the Cascade Mountains, Olympia Mountains, and Mt.  Rainier, it’s easy to see why.  Nearby Seattle and Tacoma offer diversity, fantastic schools, and universities.

Fort Lewis, named after Meriwether Lewis of the Lewis and Clark expedition, is one of the largest and most modern military bases in the United States. The base has an almost 100 year history in the Pacific Northwest.  What started out to be a small fort has grown into one of the world’s largest military complexes. The base now houses over 35,000 military members and civilian workers.  It also supports over 125,000 military retirees and more than 32,000 family members living both on and off-base.

The construction of Camp Lewis began in 1917.  As work on the camp was pushing forward, the War Department named “Camp” Lewis after Meriwether Lewis of the Lewis and Clark Expedition.  By December of that year, the camp had increased to 37,000 enlisted and officers.  These soldiers made up the 91st Division, nicknamed the “Wild West Division” because it was mainly comprised of men from the western part of the United States.  In 1927, a bond measure was passed to establish an airfield just north of the military reservation. The airfield, named Tacoma Field, officially opened in 1930. The airfield was later renamed to McChord Field in 3, July 1940. McChord Field is now listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

With the advent of World War II, Colonel Dwight D “Ike” Eisenhower (later to become a 5-star general and the 34th President of the United States) was assigned to Fort Lewis as commander to the 15th Infantry Regiment. In the 1950s, when war broke out between North and South Korea, Fort Lewis was a major training and receiving center of soldiers, and because of its access to the Pacific Ocean, it was also a major deployment center.  During the Vietnam War, the 4th Infantry Division was stationed at Fort Lewis.

In 1972, Fort Lewis given the task of making up a volunteer Army, and so the 9th Infantry Division was reactivated and sent to Fort Lewis.  The 9th Infantry became the first volunteer division of the United States Army.

On February 1, 2010, McChord Air Force Base joined Fort Lewis to become Joint Base Lewis McChord.  Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM). The joint base was established in accordance with 2005 Base Realignment and Closure Commission, ordering the consolidation of nearby facilities into a single joint base.
