How to Post Instagram-Worthy Photos

Ever wonder how your favorite Instagrammers get that perfect travel shot? Throw your envy out the window and use our tips to get swoon-worthy pics, too.

Timing is Everything.

Remember, timing is everything when it comes to the best picture. Put your phone on burst mode and take as many photos as you can. Don’t worry, you can shuffle through them afterward to filter out the good from the bad and delete the rest.

Consider the time of day. Use natural light for a clear and crisp photo. Most photographers love to shoot during the “Golden Hour” – the first hour after the sun rises and the last hour before the sun sets. During that time, the light changes quickly, but it adds more contrast and colors to the photos.

Find a Fresh Perspective.

Don’t be afraid to get down and dirty when trying to take that perfect photo. Stand in the ocean. Lay on the ground. Climb that tree. Use different angles for an intriguing perspective. Don’t forget to hold your camera both vertically and horizontally to see which orientation crops best.

Use the grid setting on your camera. It’s as simple as going into your camera settings and turning the grid on. The grid will help you take a straight shot and guide you to get the right balance in your photograph. When you’re lined up properly, touch your screen to adjust the camera’s focus.

Touch it up.

Don’t be afraid to edit your photos. Use popular apps like VSCO or Snapseed to adjust exposure, color and contrast and make other enhancements. There are also one-touch filters you can simply apply to the photo.

Instagram’s in-app editing also works well! Play around with the features – you can always go back and undo a change. Don’t feel comfortable with all the options? We recommend you try the vignette and the tilt-shift features. Sometimes Instagrammers use filters to improve their photo. Use your best judgment. If the picture looks better naturally than with a filter, always stick with #nofilter.

We hope these tips will help you build your confidence to share your travel photos online. If you have photos of your stay at RLH Corporation destinations, we’d love to see them. Use #WorthIt to share. Bon Voyage!
